Today, we are releasing the results of our 2010 JavaOne survey conducted at the JavaOne conference last September in San Francisco. We received more than 600 completed survey responses from IT professionals to gauge community sentiment of Oracle’s control of open source projects Java and MySQL. From the results, we created a nifty infographic below (feel free to use the infographic as you wish).

In the survey, we asked people’s opinions on the following:
1. Under Oracle, open source projects will:
~ Thrive
~ Barely hang on
~ Die
2. Do you think the Oracle lawsuit against Google is:
~ Good for Java
~ Bad for Java
~ Has no impact on Java
3. At renewal time, do you expect MySQL prices to:
~ Increase
~ Decrease
~ Remain the same
~ I use PostgreSQL (not MySQL)
4. Who would you like to see in a dunk tank:
~ Larry Ellison
~ Bill Gates
~ Steve Jobs
~ Eric Schmidt
Highlights from the survey include:
- Open source projects will barely hang on: 46 percent of respondents say they expect open source projects such as MySQL to stagnate under Oracle ownership. 35 percent believe that open source will thrive and 19 percent believe open source projects will die under Oracle ownership.
- Oracle is bad for Java: 56 percent of respondents indicated that Oracle’s lawsuit against Google regarding copyright and patent infringement charges is bad for Java. Only 14 percent said that the lawsuit would be a good thing for Java and 30 percent believe it will have no impact on Java.
- MySQL prices to increase at renewal time: Under Oracle, more than 42 percent of respondents say they expect MySQL prices to increase at renewal time. Additionally, 38 percent believe they will remain the same and 6 percent say they will decrease. 14 percent surveyed use PostgreSQL and not MySQL.
- Respondents prefer to see Larry Ellison in a dunk tank: Nearly 40 percent of respondents would like to see Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, in a dunk tank more so than other well known executives like Bill Gates (25 percent), Steve Jobs (26 percent) or Eric Schmidt (9 percent).

I sure do wish you’d asked better questions. Like are you actively looking at non-Oracle open source for your database needs, do you think you can leave Java or mySQL at a reasonable cost, has your opinion of PostgreSQL improved since Oracle’s takeover of Sun, have you downloaded it since the deal or when might you.
Yeah, those questions are pretty self-serving but it was your survey and they would have provided a lot more insight than the dunk tank question.
