We’re unveiling today, through a partnership with application monitoring tools provider New Relic, a plug-in to ease and enhance the user experience for our shared customers. With a New Relic plug-in for PostgreSQL and our Postgres Plus Advanced Server, our shared customers are able to view metrics for their database in the New Relic user interface. We’re one of several companies releasing a New Relic plug-in now that that company has opened its platform for plug-in creation.
Many of our customers use New Relic and we recognized the value of providing a single user interface for monitoring application performance. With the New Relic plug-in, our combined customer base can view their PostgreSQL or Postgres Plus Advanced Server metrics together with all the other metrics associated with their software and systems. Seeing the performance of the database alongside the performance of the other elements of the software stack is quite valuable. The end result is a single location with a graphical view, enabling IT staff to monitor performance across all applications.
In addition, New Relic users identifying database performance issues from the new plug-in dashboard may find the wide range of performance and tuning tools in EnterpriseDB’s Postgres Enterprise Manager valuable in pinpointing bottlenecks and providing rapid solutions. Postgres Enterprise Manager can complement the developer’s tasks in performance monitoring, identifying issues, narrowing issues to specific causes, investigating fixes, testing those fixes and deploying them.
Some of the tools that developers who are using New Relic and PostgreSQL or Postgres Plus Advanced Server may find especially useful are: Postgres Expert, the ‘DBA in a box’ for implementing best practice database parameter settings; the SQL Profiler, which rapidly finds slow-running SQL on demand or on a scheduled run; the Index Advisor, which suggests various index types based on queries against a particular table; and the EXPLAIN Analyzer, which graphically displays database access plans.
